Importing and registering your vehicle in Germany

You need to be aware of the following if you wish to have your vehicle registered in Germany:

  • The vehicle has an EU type-approval. The vehicle in question then has a COC (certificate of conformity). For registration, it will also need to undergo a periodic technical inspection (PTI) according to § 29 of the German Road Traffic Licensing Regulation (StVZO). A technical inspection carried out in an EU or EEA Member State (according to Directive 2009/40/EC, as amended) may be recognised.
  • The vehicle does not have EU type-approval: This vehicle has to be appraised according to § 21 StVZO and individual approval will be issued.

Please contact your local GTÜ partner if you have any questions about the due dates for the periodic technical inspection or the recognition of foreign vehicle documents.
